The Inaugural Sportaholic NFL Roundtable Debate

Ahh, at last we have football people. After a 130 day lockout, countless court ligation and the absence of the Hall of Fame game, the first few pre-season games scheduled today beginning with Baltimore vs. Philly and Jacksonville vs. New England at 7:30 EST. We here at the Sportaholic have set about a roundtable discussion on the burning questions facing the league this year. This has been one of the most interesting off-seasons in history with the NFL lockout and in turn the expedited free agency period that has produced a lot of player movement in a short amount of time. NFL fans buckle up for a fun ride this season but before its gets under way, allow Ashley, Taylor, Michael and Carlos to answer the biggest questions facing the best teams this year.

Michael

Taylor

So without further interruption we give the Sportaholic NFL Roundtable:

1. Philly has lapped the field in terms of free agency adding the like of Nnamdi Asomagha, Cullen Jenkins, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith and more, leading some to call them the Dream Team of the NFL. Are the Philadelphia Eagles the team to beat with their additions via free agency?

Carlos: No - Well I personally don’t believe you win championships in August, but with that being said you have to sit back and marvel at what the Eagles have been able to accomplish in such a short span. They have added Pro Bowlers at every position of need not to mention the depth that they have been stockpiling as well. However I always take the notion of thinking that you have to take down the champ before you can be considered the team to beat so I have to say that until dethroned that the Super Bowl champs Green Bay are the team to beat. Philly on paper is close behind though.

Ashley: Yes - I'm not saying I hopped on the bandwagon like most of my female counterparts, but I am an official Eagles fanatic. I was already a Vick and Co. follower but these additions, including my college buddy Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, have definitely turned out to be something that I find very "Dream Team-like". I'm confident the Eagles will make it to playoffs if they can stay healthy but I'm still a believer that anything goes in the NFL. Dream Team....ha....in your dreams....

Michael: No - I don’t think so. Sure the Miami Heat was the team with the bull’s eye on their back but the NFL is much different. Nnamdi Asomugha and Cullen Jenkins are impact players on the defensive side of the ball however Ronnie Brown is nowhere near an upgrade in my mind. LeSean McCoy and rookie Dion Lewis can more than cover the work load in Andy Reid’s offense. There are many other teams in the NFL that are more proven and more worthy of being the teams to beat. New England, Indianapolis, Green Bay and Pittsburgh are still the teams to beat in the NFL

Taylor: No - Philly has lapped the field in terms of free agency adding the like of Nnamdi Asomagha, Cullen Jenkins, Ronnie Brown and more, leading some to call them the Dream Team of the NFL. Are the Philadelphia Eagles the team to beat with their additions via free agency? Yes (on paper), Vince Young better hope his teammates can back up the Dream Team label he put on them better then the Miami Heat did when Lebron did on the Heat. The chances of being a super bowl contender can be stronger if they re- sign Desean “Mr. Excitement” Jackson. But also Michael Vick’s throwing ability and game management skills must improve from last year. Also in this mix are the New England Patriots with the addition of big play treat. Chad Ochocinco (I think Ochocinco can make a good run at Randy Moss’ s single season record I’m just saying.) and Albert Haynesworth (Maybe Coach Belicheck can get him back to his 2009 form if not his career is done).

2. The Chicago Bears were not expected to contend in 2010 and stunningly went 11-5 and the Dallas Cowboys expected to make a Super Bowl run but finished with a dismal 6-10 mark. With that in mind, who will be the surprise sleeper team this year and in that same token who do you think will be a surprisingly bad team this year?

Carlos: Houston and Tampa Bay - I think the team that will make the most drastic improvement will be the Houston Texans. Every year we wait for Houston to have the breakthrough with their high-powered offense, but their defense always lets them down. That should change this year with the additions of Jonathon Joseph and Daniel Manning at the CB spots. They also spent all but one of their draft picks on defense adding DE J.J Wyatt, LB Brooks Reid and also a nice underrated cornerback in Brandon Harris. And to top it off they get back stud LB Demeco Ryans who is the heart and soul of that defense. Wade Phillips takes over on that side of the ball and he always seems to have success with his defenses. If the Texans can get just a average defense they will be a dangerous team and I think this is the year.

On the downside this year I see the Tampa Bay Bucs having a tough follow up to last season’s success. Its only so many times that teams allow you to sneak up on them and Tampa’s success will make teams take notice to them on the schedule. Josh Freeman is a “Man” but he can only take that team so far. They also play in a tough division with Atlanta making big moves in the draft and free agency, New Orleans still in the Super Bowl contender mix, and Carolina will be much improved I believe this year. So the Bucs will have to play almost twice as good this year to get to double digit wins again.

Ashley: Great question! I love to see a good underdog make its heyday into the limelight, but this year I will be neutral. With all the trades and with no games being played yet, I don't know who will choke or come out on top. Ask me the same thing in a month

Michael: Houston and Chicago - I think this year’s surprise team is the Houston Texans. Each and every year they look like they will contend for a playoff push and fail to live up to expectations. This year however, Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Arian Foster and Co. are looking to push past those expectations and make a deep playoff push. Through the draft the Texans were able to LOAD up on defensive talent with the addition of J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed and Brandon Harris. Safety Shiloh Keo is the dark horse rookie to make the biggest impact.

The team I believe that fails to make anything promising of their season is the Bears. I only say this because Jay Cutler is such an over rated QB in my mind. His lack in reading the right receivers and never having much touch on the ball hurts him and could have easily taken last year’s 11-5 team and made the a 9-7 or 8-8 team. The defense is aging and hasn’t shown many signs of that yet but will they this year?

Taylor: The Houston Texans, they addressed they’re need at secondary by signing a younger cheaper version of Asomagha in Jonathan Joseph at corner. With an explosive offense with Matt Schaub Adrian Foster and “Don’t Mess with the Andre” Johnson (yeah that’s right Courtland) plus a talented line and Linebacker Core they should be in good position for the playoffs. Arizona Cardinals should make a push for the playoffs at QB with the addition of Kevin Kolb at QB but the OL has to improve to make the Kolb to Fitzeragald combo work and to help open up that run game.

3. We all know about the antics of Chad Ochocinco and stubbornness of Albert Haynesworth. We also know about the tight lipped nature of Patriots coach Bill Belicheck. Do you think the addition of these two players to the New England Patriots will either hurt or help them? And how do you see those two fitting into that locker room?

Carlos: When you come to the New England Patriots, they don’t adjust to you, you adjust to them. I think that both players will be fine because if not, they will be shipped out on the first thing smoking in Boston. Ochocinco will have to tone down the antics to a certain degree but he will still bring something we haven’t witnessed from these Pats: personality. He is already at it as he said he will live with a fan to get acclimated to the area. He will get the most out of Belicheck and his iron fist and maybe its a good thing for the coach as he may get him to be a little more spontaneous. As for Fat Albert, he is the one I would be worried about. Ochocinco has been called a lot but never lazy. Haynesworth will have to change his entire mentality to fit the Pats way. He has to be motivated and it seems he has every reason to now. Both players have been given the opportunity to leave dismal teams and have a chance to win a ring, so I think both will show up and do what’s asked of them, at least in the short run.

Ashley: As long as Albert has his 4-3 defense and Chad gets the damn ball they should be fine. The NFL is full of egos and I'm certain they should be reprimanded accordingly by Belicheck. If he let a future Hall of Famer go mid-season I have no doubt he'll ditch the attitudes if need be. Go Belicheck!!

Michael: I don’t see the addition of Chad OchoCinco and bad at all. Sure he has some crazy antics on and off the field but it’s never been disruptive to his teammates. Most of his fun is just ill will toward the old school football fans. Albert Haynesworth is in my mind worthless. The guy is a walking talking cancer to any locker room he is a part of. There is nothing in my mind that tells me that Haynesworth will be successful. He’s a much lazier and out of shape version of the big guy in the middle already Vince Wilfork.

Taylor: It will depend on the players themselves Belicheck’s player’s know what it takes to win and to win DEEP into the players from the starters to the bench they are prepared (example when Brady went down in 09 first game in the season Cassel stepped up ) with that said the two better come in with the attitude to win, to contribute, and don’t be larger than the team, because sure Belicheck is a proven winner, he is known to take players who teams have given up on and turn them into Pro Bowlers ( Cory Dillon and Randy Moss), as long as you have the attitude to sacrifice to change you will be great if don’t you will be shown the door just ask Randy Moss.

4. Arian Foster went from undrafted rookie to leading the league in rushing this year with a total of 1,616 yards. Who will be the breakout player of the upcoming season?

Carlos: Jermichael Finley - My breakout player is one that I predicted last year but he was injured. Jermichael Finley the TE for the Green Bay Packers. He is 6’5 247 pounds and runs like a gazelle. He has all the physical attributes to become the next great tight end in the game. And when you have Aaron Rodgers as your QB you know you will get plenty of chances. He was on the cusp of having a great season last year but the injury of course derailed him. I see him catching 60 balls for over 1,000 yards easily in that pass happy offense because he is such a mismatch rather if you put him at the normal tight end spot or if you flank him out as an extra receiver. Finley will be a force to be reckoned with next year for the Pack Attack.

Ashley: Legarrete Blount - Although you went with a RB, I'm going with one too. I'd like to see Legarrett Blount continue with his success. He didn't really get to shine until after Cadillac Williams' injury but he proved to be a great back up in Tampa Bay. Ahem....and I like to see players who get cut from the Titans have a great career elsewhere

Michael: Emmanuel Sanders - I don’t know about a huge break out year but I believe Emmanuel Sanders from the Pittsburgh Steelers will have a huge year. Last year Sanders was 4th WR behind Antwaan Randle El. With the release of Randle El the Steelers are showing that they have faith in their young WR core aside from Hines Ward. Sanders last season totaled 28 catches for 376 yards and two touchdowns. During the last four games of the season however Sanders was the target of 15 receptions for nearly 200 yards. Look for Sanders to improve on his play greatly from last season. The only thing slowing Sanders right now is the surgery he had on his foot a week ago.

Taylor: Jermicheal Finley - Like the Pack don’t need any more weapons as it is to make a run for back to back super Bowls if it wasn’t for a season ending injury he might be a pro bowler he might be the spark to help them get over some key divisional games. If he can stay healthy the pack will definitely be in the NFC title game

5. A recent report on SI.com chronicled the possibilities of player being injured more frequently this year due to the lockout and players not being in the normal condition they would be because of it. How do you think the players will be affected by the lockout as far as conditioning and physical shape?

Carlos: As you can see with the rash of Achilles and Knee injuries, you can tell that players weren’t as prepared as they would have like to be. Most guys probably took it easy during the lockout, not knowing when it would end. Take a look at former Minnesota Viking Bryant McKinnie who showed up to camp 30 pounds overweight. The guys who are workout warriors are not the ones to be worried about it the McKinnie of the NFL that you have concerned about. I think there will be more injuries than usual but its football and every season players get hurt so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Ashley: That's a toss up. It depends on the mental toughness of the player and what they did during the offseason. You'll see the one's who actually made the most of their time off from the lockout by working out and staying focused ready to take on this season in a short period of time. I hope everyone realizes that even on the professional level that there are some players who skip a workout or two or even decide to party more than getting ready. I say all of that to say it depends on who came to play and who wants to go home.

Michael: You would think that conditioning in the off season for a professional athlete is something that they would be accustomed too. The lock out on the other hand put some of the players whose work ethics have already been pulled into question in danger of being hurt. Teams led optional practices run by players however attendance could not be made mandatory. Look for a couple of notable players to go down in the first couple weeks of the regular season because they were too “good” for off-season conditioning.

Taylor: It depends on the player or teams, some teams had involuntary workouts (Saints and Jets) and players especially the great ones stayed in shape, plus the coaching staff knows how to keep players for getting hurt in the pre-season but the regular season anyone is accessible to an injury.

6. And of course for the final question, who will win the Super Bowl this year and why?

Carlos: - New York Jets. I think there about eight to nine teams in contention. Those teams are New England, NY Jets, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Green Bay, New Orleans and Atlanta. Those are the teams that clearly are a cut above the rest in the league. From this point on I think it’s just a crapshoot. You never know which team will sustain an injury to a key player or who will be in a slump this from year to year. If I had to pick a Super Bowl match-up I would go NY Jets vs. Philadelphia. I hate to jump on the Philly bandwagon but I just think their talent and depth at every position will be hard to beat. As for the Jets, they have been down this road the last couple of years and I think Mark Sanchez 3rd year will be the charm for the Jets. As for the winner of the game (Drum Roll please), I will go with NY Jets. It just seems that this team has been knocking on the door for so long that their due has to come right. They have the defense of course with Sexy Rexy leading them and their offense might finally have just enough with the addition of Plaxico Burress to put them over the top. I can’t believe I’m picking the Jets but you heard it hear first.

Ashley: - Philadelphia. Hmmmm.....who's going win the big one? If I'm dreaming "Inception" style I'd go with the Eagles because like I said above....I follow Vick and Co. On the other hand, if I'm awake throwing a few cold ones back then I'd say "Let the games begin!" The Lombardi trophy could be won by any team....

Michael: - Pittsburgh. I have to say this, I’m a homer and I’m going with the Steelers. It’s not like they aren’t talented enough because they surely are. Losing against the Packers in the Super Bowl last year crushed my morale. Well it was crushed for about three days until I started scouting the next season. The Steelers like history says don’t get better through free agency they just reload through the draft. Cameron Heyward was a great pick but I don’t think he’ll contribute the most to another super bowl run. Look for RB Baron Batch out of Texas Tech to have a large impact as a third down back and eventual successor to Mewelde Moore. Also Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown I believe have a shot at nickel and dime back coverage. I still don’t believe it was the Packers that beat the Steelers although I think that the Packers have a very well rounded team. I believe in the end of it all the Steelers shot themselves in the foot in trying to win number 7.

Taylor: - New England Hey Ill take this further I’ll pick the 6 teams from each Conference who will make the playoffs: AFC: Steelers, Texans, Jets, Patriots, Colts and Chiefs. In the NFC: Saints, Packers, Buccaneers, Eagles, Seahawks, and Rams. On paper of course the Eagles but my pick is the Patriots. They always have one or two players who fly under the radar on offense and their defense is steady improving

The Chris Johnson Contract Dispute

VS.

Eric Dickerson
He has been compared to some of the greats at his position and has posted similar numbers the greats such as Eric Dickerson (who could forget those goggles and that Jheri Curl?) and Emmitt Smith. So it’s only right that he has a similar holdout just like those players. Dickerson had his holdout moment in 1985 just two years into his contract (Just like Johnson) and Smith had his infamous spat with Jerry Jones back in 1993. Ultimately both Dickerson and Smith received multi year deals to suffice them but they had to go to extreme lengths for ownership to reward them their just due. Chris Johnson is now in the same capacity as these two Hall of Fame running backs. I guess if you want to be comparable you have to emulate the greats who came before you, on and off the field right?

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt
The Chris Johnson contract dispute has to give every Titan fan a moment of trepidation as the best player in powder blue and navy has a legit beef with his deal and is putting the Titans in a tough situation. This isn’t your run of the mill contract dispute either, as both sides have valid points and appear to have dug their feet in the ground as neither side wants to budge in a positive direction. What is so fascinating about the Johnson contract squabble is the fact that still has two years left on a contract that is clearly outdated due to his performance on the field. Everyone in the state of Tennessee, and for that matter everyone in the world, knows that Johnson is worth more than his scheduled $550,000 he in line for this year. The craziest thing about his contract situation is that his backup Alvin Pearman is due to make $630,000 this year. That's right, his backup makes more money than Johnson does which is just preposterous to think This has the makings of an extended holdout as Johnson has reason to stay away from the Titans until he is compensated the amount that he thinks he should be. However that may be hard considering the hefty 30k fine a day fine for missing camp. And of course, Johnson’s absence hurts the Titans as they look to begin a new season under a new QB and new coaching staff. For the sake of continuity, it would be beneficial for the Titans to have their best player at least show up at camp and be in the mix with his teammates.

Above all at this moment is the stalemate in the front office on Johnson. The Titans know that running backs have a short shelf life in the NFL. Most peak around 29 and go all down hill from there. Don’t believe me you say? Well take a look at this excerpt the biglead.com:

“Earl Campbell carried the ball over 1,000 times in his first three years, averaging 4.9 yards a carry. In year 4, he still carried it a lot (361 times) but dropped to 3.8 yards per carry and was never the same. In today’s NFL, he would have played to the end of his rookie contract and earned little compared to his value to the team. Barry Foster had 390 carries in his third season, then got hurt, and never made it past five seasons. Terrell Davis blew out his knee in his fifth season. Gerald Riggs had 1,093 carries for the Falcons from age 24 to 26, and never had more than 203 in a season after that. Larry Johnson had 416 carries in year 4 in the league, the same as CJ this year, and then was done.”

It kind of puts things in perspective about running backs. One thing I will counter that argument with is how the style of Johnson isn’t as physical as the players on that list. Most football fans know that Earl Campbell was a human wrecking ball and Terrell Davis had bad knees to begin with. CJ’s style is more of the quick and elusive types that don’t take on as much visceral damage as most running backs do. He has the speed and finesse to stay out of harms way on most occasions. He is only 5’11 181 pounds for goodness sakes and knows that his meal ticket isn’t trying to run over guys as much as it is to run around them. So I believe he will be able to sustain a longer than average career at his position for that reason alone.

Samari Rolle

Another equally interesting facet of this is that the Titans also haven’t been this embroiled into a contract dispute since 1997’s Samari Rolle holdout. He missed organized workouts in May and then left the team for several days near the end of training camp as he sought a long-term contract. It was less than a week after he rejoined the team that he signed a six-year, $37.5 million deal. So this isn’t uncharted territory for the Titans even though that was back in ’97 when Floyd Reese was the GM and Jeff Fisher the coach, not incumbents Mike Reinfeldt at GM and Coach Mike Munchak. Johnson wants a deal reportedly north of $30 million dollars and has seen the recent deals awarded to running backs such as Deangelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers, Maurice Jones-Drew of Jacksonville and Steven Jackson of St. Louis, All of these players have received compensation of at least $30 million and none of those players have had the success that Johnson has had.

As an illustration take a look below:

Johnson ran for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns last season after his 2,006-yard, 14-touchdown 2009 campaign. In just three NFL seasons, Johnson has racked up over 5,500 all-purpose yards and 38 touchdowns.

He has made three straight Pro Bowls and was named the offensive player of the year by The Associated Press in 2009.

Became the sixth player to ever rush of 2,000 yards in a season

So this goes back to the point that Johnson has clearly outplayed his rookie contract but in the defense of Tennessee, it’s only so much they can do. The league only allows a 30-percent limit on how much a player's base salary can increase from one season to the next. Tennessee could restructure a deal with guaranteed signing bonus money at the risk of what would amount into a front loaded guaranteed deal upwards of $40 million. In other words that isn’t happening as it would restrict the Titans cap flexibility over the upcoming years.

In summarizing, there are no real bad guys in this situation, its just business for both sides. Johnson is at the peak of his career and deserves a new deal after outplaying his rookie contract. As we have already discussed, the short life of a RB in the NFL has been well chronicled. Johnson knows that this is his opportunity to cash in before things could change in the future. The Titans know that no matter what Johnson does, they still have under contract for another two year and could possibly franchise him for a third. They also know the history of RBs with the type of work load that Johnson has had in his first few years could eventually wear him down. Of course they would love their best player in camp to start the transition from the Jeff Fisher/Vince Young era and to give new QB Matt Hasselbeck the ultimate weapon but due to the league’s salary limitations, they are hamstrung on making a significant offer to Johnson that wouldn’t hinder there future cap space. This one has the makings of a doozy but eventually one side will have to cave and more than likely it will be Johnson. He still has two years left on his contract and can’t do much besides sit out the whole season, which would be detrimental to him as well as he would lose his free-agent accrual by one year.

I predict a deal will get done by the end of pre-season and Johnson will be available by the first regular season game. I just can’t fathom Johnson sitting out an entire season of football. He and the Titans will get a deal done but each day he misses only will make things worse in Nashville. The Titans run the risk of alienating Johnson to the point of no return i.e. Carson Palmer and the Bengals. Stay tuned as the saga is sure to grip all of Titans nation for the rest of the summer.

Palmer has vowed to never play again for the Bengals.

Sportaholics latest addition: Michael Williams

Hello fellow Sportaholics, I would like to welcome another esteemed member to our expanding team by the name of Michael Williams. He comes by way of Uniniontown, Ohio and will cover the Northeast region of sports for us. Mike has an enviable list of credentials at his disposal including a sports business degree from the University of Mount Union. Michael experience also includes night sales with the Cleveland Cavaliers, PSSI stadium operations intern for Heinz field, media relations intern for the surging Pittsburgh Pirates and marketing and media relations intern at Duquense University. Mike’s wealth of sports business acumen will be a welcome addition to the Sportaholic team. He has the type of passion for sports that all of us here on the Sportaholic share and will immediately jump in and begin to write articles for us.

So as always with any new addition to our ever expanding team, we have a set list of questions to introduce Michael to our audience. We love to throw our new writers on the hot seat and now its Mike’s turn. So with out further ado, the Sportaholic presents Michael Williams.

1. Who is your favorite sports team and why?

My favorite sports team s the Pittsburgh Pirates. I was five years old the last time they had a winning season. I have stayed true to the Pirates organization as well as their minor league affiliates. It's almost disturbing how much info I know on the Pirates, Indy Indians, Altoona Curve, Bradenton Marauders, West Virginia Power and the State College Spikes. Being a college baseball player I have devoted my entire life minus these last two years to baseball and I love every minute of it. From Andy Van Slyke and Barry Bonds to Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez to now Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker, I would never turn my back on Bucco Baseball.

2. As a media relations intern what did you learn the most working with the Pittsburgh Pirates?

The most important thing I learned was to do the best possible work day in and day out. The Pirates have award winning game notes every day out because the two men who pride themselves with that. Jim Trdinich the Director of Media Relations let me start working on these said game notes about a month into the internship and I quickly found out how important it is to keep everything perfect in the game notes even when the production on the field from your team is not perfect.

3. How has sports shaped your view on life and what would you change if anything in sports?

Sports are the Foundation of my life. Without sports I really can't even imagine where'd I be. Youth sports being coached by my best friends father and my father really blossomed me into the player and person I knew I could be. It's quite a shame that so many kids don't get to realize their full potential in life because they don't have the right last name or fat enough wallet. I lettered in four sports my senior year of high school (Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track). There is nothing about the current sports atmosphere I would change, except for maybe replays at home plate on not so close calls in the bottom of the 19th inning of games. (Thanks again Jerry Meals) All joking aside nothing needs to be changed in my honest opinion about the sports that we have today and their current cultures.

4. How would you describe your writing style?

I'd like to think of my writing style as fresh. I'm a sports expert and statistics geek but I'm also one to throw in off topic sneers here and there, which is probably why my college writing professor didn't like my writing? I'm straight to the facts in my sports writing but I also take insight from other people in order to improve my writing. I'm not afraid to use a source. Some people think using a source or another's help discredits your own writing when in all actuality you're getting better at something you love and your reporting multiple views and correct facts.

5. Is there anything else that you care to share with the audience?

Last couple things to share... I'm freshly graduated from college... A member of THE Sigma Nu Fraternity, Beta Iota Chapter... I despise Ohio State (Hail to Pitt)... My parents are the most influential people in my life along with the late great Roberto Clemente. I bid you all a farewell until next time (Which will be very soon)... One last thing BIG shout out to Carlos Paige for making this all happen.

Can James Franklin change Vanderbilt from lovable losers to contenders?

Franklin's relentless energy has been contagious for the Commodores

When someone mentions the Vanderbilt football program, It’s difficult for me not to go into a chuckle. I honestly have to stop myself from bursting into full blown hardy laughter because the Vandy program has always been a joke here in Nashville. There are various reasons behind Vandy football being comical as this is a team that perennially in the cellar of the mighty SEC conference. They are synonymous with losing just as the Chicago Cubs, the L.A. Clippers and the Cincinnati Bengals (insert jokes here) all are in there respective sport leagues. Speaking of the Chicago Cubs, the Vanderbilt football program are the lovable losers of the SEC. Teams usually facing the Commodores routinely mark that game as a win when they look at their schedule because lets face it, the Commodores usually are a bad team. They are a premier academic school (Ranked # 17th by US News and World Report) smack dab in the middle of the behemoth football conference in all of college. So it’s understandable that they will have a hard time getting W’s with so many players not solely focused on athletics as they would be at powerhouses like Florida, Alabama and LSU just to name a few. The ineptitude of Vandy is remarkable when you take a look at the numbers. Check a few quick facts below for better illustration of my point:

• Vanderbilt football has not won a conference championship since 1923

• Vanderbilt has competed in only four bowl games total in its history dating back to 1894.

• By comparison, all of the other SEC's charter members (Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, Auburn, Mississippi State, Florida, Georgia, and Ole Miss) have no fewer than 14 bowl appearances.

• Vanderbilt has posted only four winning seasons—in 1974, 1975, 1982 and 2008.

• They have beaten rival (If you can even call this a rivalry), Tennessee only once (2005) in the past 28 years.

Brian Kimbrow
However, that lovable loser mentality may be changing when the Commodores added new coach James Franklin to their payroll. The former hotshot offensive coordinator of Maryland has brought a fresh approach and new spunk to a program that needed a nice kick in the rear. This was never more evident then when Franklin recruited and landed the top three prospects in the state of Tennessee this year, out-dueling Derek Dooley and hated rival University of Tennessee for their services. Tennessee has always dominated the in-state battles for talent around these parts, so this was monumental for the Commodores. In landing Caleb Azubike, Brian Kimbrow (Rated best player in the state of Tennessee by Rivals.com) and Corey Batey, Franklin served notice that HIS Vandy team will be no push-overs. Franklin has identified what is what most fans and pundits think as a weakness and turned it into a powerful recruiting tool. The weakness that I am speaking of is their prominent academics reputation. Just like Jim Harbaugh did at Stanford, Gary Barnett at Northwestern and Tyrone Willingham at Notre Dame were able to utilize scholastic value in recruitment, so has Franklin. This is important because as most recently proved by Harbaugh at Stanford, if you can turn that perceived chink in the armor into an actual positive, then you have set yourself up in an enviable position.

Also, Franklin’s persona and charisma has seemed to resonate with the younger generation of players. “I've had a chance to think about this for two years now," Kimbrow said. "I've been being recruited since 10th grade. ... This is where I feel comfortable. This is where I want to go." Franklin is young, hip, and understands players more than older coaches ever will. He has embraced technology in a way former Vandy coach Bobby Johnson never did. Franklin is on twitter, facebook and all the various social networks used today by young players. He also hasn’t brought into the notion that Vanderbilt can’t be a successful football school. And his confidence is a breath of fresh air for a school use to playing but not competing with the big boys of the SEC. He has been relentless and it seems to rubbing off on his players as they see a man they can put their trust in.

In closing, James Franklin has come to a down and out program and already put his stamp on it. This is a team that is coming off two consecutive 2-10 seasons and is not far removed from having its most successful coach retire (Bobby Johnson) right before the start of the season (2009). The program was in shambles even for Vandy, but it appears all this has changed since the slam dunk hiring of Franklin. A lot credit has to given to David Williams of Vandy for choosing to bring in the young and brash Franklin. The results on the field may not show this year as Vandy still has holes all over its roster. They still need to find a consistent QB who can lead the offense and they also need former 1,000 yard back Warren Norman to return to pre-injury form. It’s a lot to ask for but considering the miracles Franklin has already accomplished it shouldn’t be that hard for him. Vandy has a bright future which is something you almost never heard before he arrived. “This is an opportunity to be a part of something special ... turning a program around ... building something with your own hands so that when you look back, three, four, five years from now, you can be very, very proud of what you've accomplished," said Franklin regarding the future of the program.

Only time will tell if Franklin pans out here in Nashville. One thing I gather from researching and writing column is that it won’t be for lack of trying and that is just what the doctor ordered for the lovable losers of the SEC, better known as the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Introducing Taylor Cannon:

Taylor Cannon is a sport administration degree major from the University of -Southern Mississippi and just like me, an avid sports fan. Taylor joins Sportaholic from the state of Louisiana as an expert on sports business and he has so kindly agreed to share his expertise with us here at the Sportaholic. As a sports management major, Taylor knows the in and outs of the things most GMs, sports agents and team presidents know so his addition to the Sportaholic staff is much welcomed. Taylor not only knows the management side of things but he also could tell a thing or two about what’s happening on the field, court, diamond or whatever. He is a genuine guy and that’s what made me take notice of him. He will be featured in our new sports management segment and what a perfect time to add him with all the labor distress going on in the professional sports world today.

So you know we like to baptize our newest members by fire here at Sportaholic and now its Taylor’s turn in the hot seat. I have set up a series of questions to help everyone get to know him better. Without further ado, I give Taylor:

1. So what made you get into sports management?

What made me get into sports administration was that I always had a love of sports since I was little and because I could not play any competitive sports ( I'll get into that later on) so I became interested in the business or administrative part of the industry and I decided to major in it. One day I read an article on Mark Cuban in Sports Illustrated which furthered my interest in the sports industry (and made me want to work for the Mavericks one day).

2. What is your favorite team and favorite sports memories?

The New York Yankees, I like them because of their old school traditions and they have so many great players came from that organization. My favorite sports memories were going to LSU football games with my dad and watching college football games on ESPN with my uncle. And of course I can’t forget watching my Alma Mater (Southern Mississippi) beat the ten top 10 ranked TCU Horned Frogs on a Thursday night.

3. What is the best ran organization in all of sports in your opinion?

Green Bay Packers name a team in any league where the fans can own STOCK in the team (that’s kind of cool) which means the team will never ever move from Green Bay and my second nomination would be the Dallas Mavericks- the owner come across as a laid back, but business oriented guy believes more in the team aspect of the organization and getting pieces to make the team better than just getting talent and hope it works (cough unlike the THE HEAT).

4. If you could be an agent for any athlete who would it be and why?

Outfielder Curtis “The Candy Man” Granderson of the New York Yankees, He seems like a very engaging positive and low key person who would make a great role model and spokesperson for the game of baseball and sports in general. Especially when all we hear is the negative stereotypes in sports.

5. What is your dream job in the world of sports and how would you handle that job?

Well as the cliché in the sports industry is “If you can sell, you have a job in sports", so I would love to work in inside ticket sales at first and after a few years then maybe become Director of Marketing or Fan Development. I would handle that job as if the owners don’t control the team or even the players, but the fans do. I put it like this, if the fans support mediocrity then the owner will see no need to improve, but if fans stop paying money for tickets and the stands get empty, then the owner will see a need to change pieces in the organization (if you do not believe me look at what happened to the Atlanta Thrashers or the Montreal Expos).
